Comparison of distribution conceps for Poland

The Caparol group of companies develops, produces and sells high-quality paints, varnish, glazes, chemical construction coatings, materials for facade technology and insulating technology as well as amateur paints and artist's paints. Caparol is a market leader for construction paints in Germany, Austria and Turkey and with a turnover of more than 900 million euros the fourth largest company of the industry in Europe.
Caparol maintains foreign subsidiaries and sales companies all over Europe. In particular in the East European an growth above average can be registered. In this context there was the need to check distribution structures and dispatch organisation for the Polish market and if necessary to optimise or newly design it.
The major task consisted of developing different distribution concepts taking into account different approaches, to evaluate and compare the concepts with each other. The three major approaches were:
Delivery to western Polish regions directly from Germany, delivery to central and eastern regions
from location in Poland by using available infrastrucure
Delivery all Polish regions from location in Poland, set up of new central warehouse and logistics
centre, replenishment from Germany
Delivery to complete Poland directly from German under consideration of required service level
and risk factors
Major tasks of the evaluation and plannings were the development of the different distribution structures and distribution scenarios, the calculation of the respective logistics costs and transport costs based on reference transport data and current freight rates. Furthermore for the potential establishment of a new logistic centre a warehouse study under consideration of the country specific characteristics was conducted.
Based on the planning results investment and profitability were calculated and an extensive scenarios and variations comparison was developed. Possible enlargement scenarios were considered. Result of this evaluation were concrete recommendations for the restructuring of the distribution for the Polish market. After the successful conclusion of this project the conversion of the plannings and studies was started.
